The Law and You
(Taxidermy & Live Reptiles)
- All reptiles in Australia are protected by Federal Government Wildlife Regulations. This protection also covers taxidermed native fauna, the animal’s skin, the eggs or skeletal remains. Each State within Australia, however, has its own localised regulations and guidelines on the keeping and selling of reptiles, it’s important that you consult your relevant authority, before taking the next step.
- Once you have all necessary permits and housing in place, then proceed to shop for the reptile that best suits your level of experience, circumstances and budget.
- Having animals means work! If you lead a busy life with work commitments, family or other obligations, then think hard before you buy any live animal, unless equally experienced individuals can help you.
- You have a legal obligation to maintain any animal in the approved manner, if not, then you may be liable to prosecution.
- The law is put in place to protect our wildlife and you! It allows you to purchase legally obtained animals, it gives good guidelines, which if followed will benefit both you and the animal.
- Conservation of our wildlife, along with education on the environment, is the role that the various State National Parks and Wildlife Services are committed to, so please support their efforts.
